Jamaat Leader Dead After Sherpur Election Brawl

 

Sharper Reporter: A local Jamaat-e-Islami leader has died after being injured in a clash during an election manifesto reading programme in Sherpur.Rezaual Karim, secretary of Jamaat’s Sreebordi Upazila unit, was injured in a confrontation triggered by a dispute over seating at the event in Jhenaigati.

Mohammad Azharul Islam, amir of Sreebordi Upazila Jamaat, said Rezaual died around 10pm on Wednesday while undergoing treatment at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.“After the attack at the programme, he was taken to Mymensingh Medical in a critical condition,” he told bdnews24.com.

Sherpur Superintendent of Police Kamrul Islam said the Jamaat leader had suffered head injuries and was referred from Sherpur to Mymensingh for treatment.“We have learnt that he has died,” the police officer said.Rezaual was an Arabic lecturer at Fatehpur Sfmk Fazil Madrasah.

The clash broke out following an altercation between Jamaat and BNP activists over seating in the front row.Jamaat members had reportedly arrived at the venue earlier than the BNP activists and occupied all front-row seats.The clash started as the activists threw chairs at each other. Soon, the venue turned into a battlefield as the brawl led to arson attacks on motorcycles.
