Activists beaten at Shahbagh for playing March 7 speech-Two assaulted

 

Desk Reporter/ Dhaka University Correspondent : On March 7, 2026, a confrontation occurred in front of the Shahbagh Police Station after activists played the historic March 7 speech of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Earlier that afternoon, police detained a Dhaka University (DU) student, Asif Ahmed, and a sound operator for playing the speech at Chankharpul intersection. The Officer-in-Charge (OC) stated that broadcasting the speech was prohibited.

In protest of the initial detentions, a group led by former DU student Sheikh Tasnim Afroz Emi arrived at Shahbagh Police Station around 9:30 PM with a loudspeaker on a rickshaw to play the speech again.

Around 10:45 PM, leaders and activists from Jatiya Chhatra Shakti and DUCSU confronted the protesters. They reportedly assaulted and humiliated Emi and a companion before dragging them into the station. Following the assault, the attackers handed the two individuals over to the police. The Ramna Zone Deputy Commissioner confirmed that an inquiry into the matter has been initiated.

Violence has broken out near Shahbagh Police Station after student activists played Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s historic Mar 7 speech, leaving a Dhaka University student and an associate injured. The incident occurred around 10:45pm during an event organised by Sk Tasnim Afroz Emi and others to protest the earlier detention of two people over Mar 7 commemorations.

A loudspeaker, brought in by rickshaw at 9:30pm, was set up outside the station.Leaders and activists of DUCSU and Jatiya Chhatra Shakti confronted the group.DUCSU’s Musaddiq Ali Ibne Mohammad and AB Zubair reportedly dragged the rickshaw into the station, during which Emi and a companion were beaten and humiliated.

Following the attack, Chhatra Shakti leaders handed the two over to police.In last year’s DUCSU elections, Emi contested the VP post from the leftist “Protibirodho Parishad” panel.
