Staff Reporter : The government has decided to increase the fares for long-distance and inter-district buses by 11 paisa per kilometer. Road Transport and Bridges Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam announced the decision on Thursday following a meeting with transport owners and workers’ representatives at the Secretariat.
The Minister clarified that while the fare hike applies to long-distance routes, including the Dhaka-Chittagong highway, fares for public transport within Dhaka city will remain unchanged.
A decision has been made to increase the fare of long-distance and inter-district transport by 11 paisa per kilometer, the Minister stated, noting that the adjustment was specifically calculated for 52-seater vehicles.
The new fare structure takes effect today, April 23, 2026. The Minister issued a stern warning to transport operators, stating that legal action would be taken against any owners who fail to comply with the official rates or overcharge passengers.
Addressing other modes of transport, the Minister noted that the government is not currently considering fare hikes for railways or waterways. Furthermore, this amendment will not apply to CNG-powered buses.
It was also noted during the briefing that although bus fares were increased in 2022 due to rising fuel costs, they were not subsequently reduced when oil prices fell. This latest adjustment aims to standardize the current transport economy.
