Staff reporter : A businessman was allegedly killed after he went to demand Tk 3 lakh in business dues from a friend in the capital’s Lalbagh area, with police recovering his body buried under sand three days after he went missing.
The deceased was identified as Sheikh Wasim Rony, 43. His hands and legs were tied and his face was wrapped in polythene when police recovered the body from a vacant space on the ground floor of a house at 9 BC Das Street in Lalbagh around 4:00am on Friday.
Lalbagh police station officer-in-charge Md Jamil Hossain told New Age that police detained Rony’s friend Masum for questioning on Thursday and arrested him after he allegedly confessed to the killing.

When Rony’s wife contacted Masum, he claimed that he had given Rony a cheque for the outstanding money and said he did not know where Rony had gone.That night, Rony’s brother filed a general diary with Lalbagh police reporting him missing. Masum was also present at the time, police said.
Jamil said CCTV footage showed Rony riding a motorcycle towards Masum’s house, but footage from another camera on the opposite side of the lane did not show him passing through. Masum’s house was located between the two cameras, he said.
Police subsequently detained Masum for questioning on Thursday. During interrogation, he allegedly confessed to killing Rony, the OC said.Police later recovered Rony’s body by digging up sand in the vacant space beneath Masum’s house and sent it to Dhaka Medical College morgue for autopsy.
Rony’s wife, Nusrat Jahan Shila, filed a murder case with Lalbagh police on Friday. Masum was subsequently arrested and sent to court. Rony, lived in the Shekdi area of Jatrabari, was the father of three daughters. His father was late Sheikh Abdul Rahim.
