Former Speaker Shirin Sharmin Freed on Bail from Kashimpur Jail

 

Court Reporter : Former Speaker of the National Parliament, Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, was released on bail from Kashimpur Central Women’s Jail in Gazipur today, Sunday, April 12, 2026. She walked out of the prison at approximately 6:30 PM. The case was filed on May 25 last year by Mohammad Ashraful, who accused Sheikh Hasina and 129 others.Following a court directive, the officer-in-charge of Lalbagh Police Station recorded the complaint as a first information report (FIR) on July 17 the same year.

According to case documents, Ashraful was shot in Dhaka’s Azimpur on July 18, 2024.Shirin Sharmin served as speaker from April 30, 2013, until her resignation on September 2, 2024, according to the parliament website.A Dhaka court, earlier today, granted bail to Shirin Sharmin in an attempted murder case linked to the July uprising.

Court Decision: Earlier in the afternoon, the court of Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Zakir Hossain granted her bail on a bond of Tk 50,000.

Grounds for Bail: The court reportedly considered her gender and physical illness when approving the bail petition.

Legal Status: As she was not shown arrested in any of the other six cases currently pending against her, there were no further legal barriers to her release.
Custody Timeline: Dr. Chaudhury was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) from a residence in Dhanmondi on the morning of April 7, 2026. She had been in jail for five days following the court’s rejection of a remand plea last Tuesday.
